Bank holidays were made for eating

I love food... I assume you already know this by now if you follow me on any kind of social networking channel. I usually manage to be relatively healthy during the week and have been known to display some strong willpower, but I'm not usually so disciplined over the weekend.

Bank holiday weekends are no exception. Liz and Pete came to stay with us over the most recent bank holiday and it's fair to say that we ate ourselves silly. I obviously took photos of everything so this post focuses on some of the best things I ate (and drank).

We started off the magnificent weekend of indulgence by visiting Penarth's Villa Napoli restaurant on the Saturday night. Neil and I hadn't been to Villa Napoli for over a year and Liz and Pete have never been so we were all very excited. I had the goat's cheese bruschetta to start and the tagliatelle ragú for my main meal. Not the best quality photos due to the lighting in the restaurant, but definitely good quality food! We also shared a bottle of Pinot Grigio between the four of us and it was a really lovely evening.

After we got home, we cracked open a bottle of Ice Wine. After bringing a few bottles of this wondrous discovery home from Canada, we've now found out that it's sold in our local Lidl restaurant! We're introducing it to all our friends because it's that good. Unfortunately Ice Wine bottles are half the size of a standard wine bottle, so of course we had to move on to normal wine next. Liz had also made her legendary Rocky Road for their visit so we had that for dessert! I feel I must warn you that this is only the beginning if you're already silently judging.

Sunday was a hotly anticipated day as we were all going to Pettigrew Tea Rooms for afternoon tea! We bought Liz and Pete a voucher for two for their wedding a few weeks ago, so obviously we had to accompany them because it would have been rude not to.

We headed into town a couple of hours before to do some shopping, then collectively decided to have a quick stop in Caffé Nero before our 3pm reservation at Pettigrew Tea Rooms. I know I know, coffee/hot chocolate before afternoon tea doesn't really make sense, but we were tired and I'm powerless to resist the temptations of a small skinny hot chocolate.

As usual, afternoon tea at Pettigrew Tea Rooms was everything we dreamed of. I usually have hot chocolate rather than tea as I naively used to think I disliked every variety of tea. However, I've recently discovered flavoured teas so I thought I'd try a simple organic peppermint tea. It was really refreshing and meant I got to have a pretty teapot and cup and saucer like everyone else! Bonus.

When it came to making our cake choice at the end of the afternoon after scoffing the above, I chose the raspberry and white chocolate cake. It was a bit of a risk as I usually stick to either the carrot cake or the lemon drizzle cake because I know how amazingly good they are. However, the raspberry and white chocolate didn't disappoint! I sincerely hope it's still there when I visit again at the beginning of next month.

After getting home, we complained about being full for approximately an hour before eating more Rocky Road, Doritos, mini savoury eggs and some tiger bread. There was also a lot more wine. We were all in quite a serious food coma by midnight ('are you surprised?!' I hear you say), and yet I still couldn't stop thinking about that one last mini savoury egg. Snacks are dangerous little beasts!

After Liz and Pete left on Monday morning, Neil and I had a leisurely day of pottering around the house and garden, doing the food shopping (our lives seem to revolve around food in one way or another) and catching up on a few TV programmes. In amongst all this, we finished off the tiger bread and had a fairy healthy berry smoothie!

What did you get up to over the bank holiday weekend? Did you also use it as an excuse to eat EVERYTHING? Please send me your links if you've written similar posts, mostly so that I can console myself with knowing that I'm not the only one!

So I REALLY like hot chocolate...

It's well documented that I hate tea and coffee but love hot chocolate. There's just no contest in my mind... why on earth would you choose tea or coffee when you could have a hot chocolate?

I happen to meet friends in coffee shops on quite a frequent basis which means that I drink a LOT of hot chocolate. Neil and I also like relaxing in a coffee shop for half an hour or so when we're out and about over the weekend... he drinks coffee, I drink hot chocolate. I was looking through my recent phone photos a few days ago and realised that I'd had six hot chocolates within the space of ten days. This doesn't even include the hot chocolates I've made for myself in my own house! I do nearly always order a skinny hot chocolate, but still... that's a lot of chocolatey goodness in a short space of time.

As hot chocolate looks so much more attractive than tea or coffee, I thought I'd post photos of my recent beverages for you to feast your eyes on. That's just the kind of thing I do, in case you hadn't already noticed.

Enjoy!

I'm fully expecting to have another hot chocolate (or three) over the weekend and I'm already excited. Do you love hot chocolate as much as I do? Is this even possible? Let me know!

Café review: Caffi Cwrt

Although you might already have read my blog post about our weekend in Cricieth, no series of blog posts about Cricieth would be complete without a review of the lovely Caffi Cwrt!

I'd already read great things about Caffi Cwrt on Trip Advisor before travelling to Cricieth so I couldn't wait to try it out. We spotted it snuggled in a corner on our first evening and vowed to try it out the next day after our morning walk. Just look how pretty and bright it is!

The café was quiet when we arrived at lunchtime and we were directed into a lovely quaint room next to the front window. It was so homely and felt like being in someone's dining room. The huge effort the owner has put in to decorating the café and putting their own unique stamp on it is amazing! The little touches just add so much character and authenticity. I also love the fact that absolutely everything is bilingual... a rarity in South Wales these days, unfortunately.

We were expecting a limited choice of a few sandwiches and cakes based on previous experiences in similar establishments, so we were pleasantly surprised when we looked at the menu and feasted our eyes on the vast variety of food and drinks available. There were lots of different types of tea and coffee, hot chocolate, a huge variety of milkshakes and smoothies along with the usual juices and squash. As for the food, there was a good choice of sandwiches, light bites, pastries, scones and cakes!

After jumping between about ten different options and wondering if it was acceptable to order both a piece of cake and scones, I decided to order a strawberry milkshake, cinnamon toast and scones with butter and jam. When did I ever pretend that this was a healthy weekend away? Neil ordered a pot of tea, a cheese and pickle sandwich, and lemon sponge with lemon curd and buttercream. We asked if we could sit outside in the sun and were promptly escorted to a shaded spot outside the café where we could people-watch and enjoy the view.

Our drinks were brought out first... I was almost gutted that I hadn't ordered tea as the set up was so pretty. Unfortunately, I despise tea. I've never been for a proper afternoon tea, but this felt like such an authentic experience with the vintage crockery and the knitted touches. My parents used to own this crockery set about 20 years ago!

I thought I was impressed with the drinks, but my eyes nearly popped out of my head when our food was brought out. Wait for it...

Neil's sandwich was on a different plate... it didn't look as appetising or exciting as this platter so I didn't photograph it! As you can see, Neil's slab of cake was huge and my scones already had a generous helping of butter and had lots of currants, which is just the way I like them. I was also excited about trying out the large inviting dollop of strawberry jam! As for the cinnamon toast, I've never tried it before and really enjoyed it. Toast, butter, cinnamon and sugar... what is there not to like?

I tucked in to my scones after finishing my cinnamon toast... so good. The strawberry jam was clearly homemade and was the best jam I've ever had in my life. I even wanted to eat it out of the container with my spoon when I'd finished my scones. If I'm totally honest, I did eat quite a bit in this manner even though I was full to bursting after finishing my food. Although the scones weren't very big, they were really delicious and were the perfect texture. I love a good quality scone!

Our whole meal cost £13.55 which was very reasonable, in my opinion. Neil had about three cups of tea out of his pot, my milkshake was pretty big and the scones and cake alone would have cost a fortune in a chain café like Costa. The service was friendly and efficient, the location was ideal and the decor was definitely one-of-a-kind and very welcoming. No complaints!

Tea or coffee? No thanks.

This blog post focuses on the rather boring topic of my hatred of tea and coffee and my love for hot chocolate. I'm definitely no Shakespeare.

I always feel like such a child when someone offers me tea or coffee. 'No thanks, can I just have some water please?' That's my standard response, right there. I've tasted each one once, and hated them both. I also don't like the idea of being reliant on caffeine and needing a cup of coffee in the morning before I can function. However, I do love a good hot chocolate and it would be amazing if it was a social convention to offer people hot chocolate as well as tea and coffee. Why isn't it? I would honestly love to know.

I don't even buy fancy/posh hot chocolate. Give me a pot of Options, or even a sachet, and I'll be happy. Current favourite flavours include Dreamy Caramel and Outrageous Orange. AND they're low in calories and fat. Win!

I also love buying novelty mugs for my hot chocolate. Here's the latest purchase, half price in the Disney store:

Perfect for a disgruntled evening!

Anyone else not a fan of tea and coffee? Or is really just me?
